The First Sip Begins Before the Cup

The First Sip Begins Before the Cup

Great coffee begins before the first sip.

It begins when you open the bag and the aroma rises. It permeates the space you are in. It begins with the sound of beans falling into the grinder, the weight of the scoop in your hand, the kettle coming to temperature, and the first bloom of coffee when hot water meets fresh ground coffee in the French press.

Making every moment count is part of a healthy coffee lifestyle.

Appearance of the coffee beans.

Aroma.

Taste.

Finish.

These are the foundation for coffee pleasure.

Do nothing important until you have turned off your phone. Shut out the world outside your door. Sip, Savor. And enjoy every second of your coffee pleasure.

That … is a coffee lifestyle.

That … is owning the morning, nit being owned by the morning.

I have lived this way for many years.

My ritual begins with filling our burr grinder with fresh roasted coffee. For me and my family, we drink the finest coffees in the world … curated by Cup of Luxury, the only brand in the world that is crafted for connoisseurs.

Awarded five-stars. Graded 100 points. It is absolute perfection in every cup.

Coffee is chemistry, agriculture, craft, memory, ritual, hospitality, and pleasure arriving in one cup.

For over 30 years I have been fascinated by the question beneath the cup: what is it about this coffee that helps me slow down, praise God, enjoy serving my wife, and taking time to get my head and heart right before going into my day?

The answer lives in layers.

Beans give us origin, variety, process, harvest, storage, and roast. We craft our coffees to a medium-dark, or as we say in the industry … Viennese roast.

The grinder determines how quickly water can reach what the grind holds. Water carries those soluble compounds into the cup. Temperature and pressure change extraction. Time and exposure change extraction. Ratio changes concentration. Even the vessel matters because aroma, temperature, and the way we physically experience the coffee continue changing after the brew time is finished.

Then the human experience enters.

That is where culinary research becomes an investment of my time,  and the pleasures I experience are the dividends.

Technical perfection can produce an impressive cup. Hospitality produces a memorable one.

It is wise to consider every facet. Quality of coffee. Spring water over tap. Brand of French press, because let’s be clear … connoisseurs choose the finest and purest way to prepare coffee, and that way is by French press.

Grind low quality coffee, and regardless of how pure the water … you get a low quality experience.

A cup of coffee placed in someone's hands reflects to what degree you care about them. Hospitality is paramount. It can say, sit down. Sip. Savor. Enjoy. Stay with me awhile. Share life with me. What happened? What are you building? What has you excited?

Some of the best conversations of my life have started with amazing coffee.

That is why I resist separating culinary craft from human experience.

Flavor architecture matters. Roast profiles are significant. The extraction process matters. Understanding how a splash of heavy cream accentuates the nuances of the single origin or specialty blend. Professional techniques determine the overall experience.

Then comes the final question: What experience did we create?

I want coffees with aromatic profiles that pull you in, stare into your eyes and kisses you. That reaches you before the cup reaches your lips. I want natural semi-sweetness that reveals itself in layers. I want darkness, brightness, and life with purpose; viscosity like silk on the palate; perfect body with presence; and a long lingering smooth finish that gives you a reason to take another sip. Then another.

I also want the room.

Morning light.

Afternoon sun or rain.

Hues of amber, lavender, passion, and beauty of evening’s greetings.

Conversation.

Moroccan leather that when you sit, the chair pulls you in and hugs you just right.

It is a beautiful gift to share these moments with someone you care about across the table.

A few minutes when the world stops demanding an answer, and how great it feels to look into the face of life and command it to pause.

These are the aspects of a coffee lifestyle that no laboratory measurement can finish for us.

Culinary R&D reaches its highest purpose when science, craft, ritual, pleasure, and hospitality converge.

The coffee should be exceptional.

The experience should make you want to stay.

If you haven’t experienced coffee like this, I invite you to connect with me. I will be your personal guide to soulful, intoxicatingly exquisite, awesome coffee.
