Deadlines Can Wait

This week's Studio Series is happening. Later. I believe in deadlines.

I have never missed one.

There's pride in that.

There is also responsibility in it.

A deadline is a promise made to yourself, to your work, and sometimes to the people who have come to expect you to show up.

That has always meant something to me.

Still, there is one principle that sits above every calendar, every obligation, every publication date, every unfinished page, and every promise made to the work.

FAMILY FIRST. ALWAYS.

That is easy to say when life is calm.

It means something different when the phone rings.

When the news changes everything.

When someone you love is running out of time.

When the road ahead becomes more important than the page in front of you.

In those moments, priorities become very clear.

The work still matters.

The deadline still matters.

The commitment still matters.

Family matters more.

There are articles that can be finished tomorrow.

There are meetings that can move.

There are schedules that can bend.

There are plans that can be rebuilt.

There are moments with the people we love that arrive once.

They deserve our full presence.

They deserve the miles.

They deserve the inconvenience.

They deserve whatever has to be moved aside.

Because there comes a point when showing up becomes the only deadline that matters.

A hand needs holding.

A room needs filling with familiar voices.

A goodbye needs time.

Love asks for presence.

That is where the work yields.

That is where the calendar yields.

That is where every self-imposed expectation finds its proper place.

I have never missed a deadline.

I still believe deeply in discipline, consistency, and honoring commitments.

I also believe something even more deeply.

FAMILY FIRST. ALWAYS.

So sometimes the page stays unfinished.

Sometimes the story waits.

Sometimes the schedule breaks.

Sometimes the work rests exactly where it is.

And the person steps away from the desk and goes where love requires.

There is no failure in that.

There is perspective.

There is devotion.

There is knowing the difference between what feels urgent and what truly matters.

Deadlines can wait.

Family comes first.

Always.
